悪目立ちなく存在感を出しているのが心憎い
今、私はアメリカ北東部のボストンにいます。宗教的迫害を受けた清教徒が1620年にイギリスからメイフラワー号に乗ってプリマスに上陸したことは教科書で勉強しましたが、ボストンはその後のイギリス人によって作られ、アメリカでは古い歴史を持つ街として知られています。
私たちはマサチューセッツ州全体をボストンと呼んでいますが実は複数の都市群の集まりで、例えばチャールズ川を挟んではボストン市とケンブリッジ市に分かれています。日本人には聞き慣れたハーバード大学やMIT（マサチューセッツ工科大学）はこのケンブリッジ市にあります。
先日ハーバード近くの道を歩いていたら面白い看板が目に入りました。
歴史ある本屋や靴修理の店、ヘアーサロンなどさりげないけどお洒落な看板。タバコ屋は老舗の趣を出しています。日本では多分見られない刺青（いれずみ）屋？の看板。どれも建物や街並みのアクセサリーのように悪目立ちなく存在感を出しているのが心憎いですね。
因みに我がカフェの看板。ことうヘムスロイド村に工房をもつ鍛フォージワークスの石倉兄弟の作品です。
I am in Boston now, which is north east of UA. We learned that Mayflower carried Pilgrims who were a group seeking religious freedom from the Church of England to Plymouth in 1620. Boston was made by English people after that, so Boston is known as an old histor ical town in the US.
We usually call the entire state of Massachusetts ” Greater Boston”. However, it’s a collection of cities. For example, the Charles River divides Boston and Cambridge. Universities such as Harvard Univ. and MIT which are familiar to Japanese people are in Cambridge.
When I was walking near Harvard Square in Cambridge the other day, some interesting shop signs came into my sight. Historic shoe repair’s shop sign and hair salon sign are not flashy but stylish. Tobacco shop have a style of a long-established store. Sign of Tattoo shop is something you never see in public in Japan. All these signs don’t stand out very much, but have presence and some of them are fashionable. They harmonize the streetscape, as well.
By the way, the shop sign of my cafe was made by iron artists, Ishikura brothers of Tan Forge Works in Hemslojd, Higashioumi-Shi.
