I have been hearing mostly about coronavirus these days, but I received wonderful news from my family member. H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) named Kounotori #9 which was launched from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on May 21st arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on May 26th. ISS is a manned space station which is a multi-national collaborative project among five participating agencies : NASA (USA), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA( Japan),ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). Kounotori means “stork” in Japanese and it had a mission to transport supplies such as food, equipment for experiments and other provisions to the ISS. After launching successfully Kounotori approached the ISS to a proximity of 10 meters and then one of ISS’s crew members operated the station’s robotic arm to capture Kounotori. It looks that Kounotori stays in the space, but in fact both ISS and Kounotori are flying at an altitude of about 400 km above the Earth with a speed of 7.8 km/seconds (it orbits the earth 16 times a day). On the livestream, I watched the robotic arm reaching for Kounotori as well as both NASA and JAXA operating rooms. Now we have a chaotic situation due to coronavirus on Earth, but on the other hand there was an incredible joining together in space. Both are really happening now.
